Have you ever dreamed of staying home and raising your kids instead of farming them out to the strangers at day care?  Do you want to have a say in your children’s formative years and character development? Do you want to be the main influence in your children’s life instead of the teachers and children in daycare? Are there bills left at the end of your paycheck? Ready for something different? Working at home jobs may be your answer.

My Story
I was fortunate enough to be able to stay at home and raise my children after they were born. I got to go on their field trips, work in their class rooms, participate in their school activities and be available (and have the energy) for homework, sports programs, and instilling my values and morals in them. I decided to go back to work when my son turned 12. I discovered that I felt totally disconnected from my children’s interests, concerns, problems, desires, plans and dreams because I didn’t have the time or the energy to keep up with them after being gone from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. five days a week. And there was still the matter of all the laundry, cooking, cleaning and shopping. By the time the weekend came around I was spent. Even with the help of my wonderful husband I just didn’t have the energy for my kids let alone for my own sanity and rest. I knew there had to be a better way! That’s when I started looking for a way to generate money from home.

Home-Based Job or Business
A home based business is different from a home based job. Examples of work at home jobs are data entry, surveys, mystery shopping, virtual assistant/secretary, selling products on eBay, creating websites, writing e-books, etc.  That’s all fine, but do you know how to do that? If so, that’s awesome, go for it. If you have no idea where to start there’s a good chance you’re frustrated even before you can begin. That’s what pushed me into looking into a home-based business. These are legitimate work from home jobs. Examples of home-based businesses are MLM companies, direct sales (your product or someone else’s), or a service (like cake decorating or clothing alterations). However, I got tired of beating the streets for clients and I hated dragging people to meetings to get them to sign up “under me” and then trying to convince them to do the same. That’s when I thought I would start looking on the internet for help.

Internet-Based Business
Do you want to work from home stuffing envelopes? No? An internet business in promoted on the internet. With the advent of the World Wide Web, your selling territory is global – that is 6 billion people. The birth rate is about 134 million per year. Even with the global death rate of 57 million per year, that’s still 77 million people each year. Each year there are 4,774,000,000 consumers that range from ages 18 to 80.  If you want to concentrate on the United States, then you have 305,529,237 people to market to. Just the shear numbers alone are on your side. You won’t have enough time to market to all of those people.

1.    Pyramid Schemes – Are illegal and have mostly been eliminated as a business model. But the MLM business model may still build on levels. (That’s why they call it Multi-Level-Marketing.) So be sure that you closely examine how your income will be generated. Matrixes are the new thing now, but you’ll still see the top dogs making the majority of the money. Do your due diligence, research the numbers and the compensation plan. A friend recently showed me an MLM company where the compensation plan was so complicated that she couldn’t even explain it. I was told that the company had my best interest at heart and to just trust them. Thanks, but NO! Where money is concerned everybody has their own best interests in mind. If you can’t understand it, then steer clear.

2.    Products and Services – If you go with promoting products and services, it is suggested to have more than one product to offer. While some companies offer a number of products, they generally will be all within the same niche. For an example you may have a pet care company that sells a hundred different products. However, they are all focused around dogs. Look for a program that offers a number of different products so that you can market to different niches and reach different groups of people.

3.    Mentoring and Coaching – Whatever you decide for your home-based and/or internet-based business, the most important decision is to choose a mentor or coach who will guide you into your success. You can have the best products, service, or program but if you don’t have the support you need to get yourself up and running and learn how to become an internet marketing pro, then your money will be wasted and you will be frustrated and discouraged.
